North Carolina adopted the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in June 2010. These standards have been adopted by 45 states, the District of Columbia, and 3 United States territories. North Carolina also adopted the North Carolina Essential Standards for Science, Social Studies, Healthful Living, Arts, Guidance, and World Languages during 2010 and 2011. The standards in these curricular areas were written by North Carolina educators. North Carolina adopted new Essential Standards for each of the Career and Technical Education areas of study during 2011 as well. The standards for all content areas meet state and federal requirements outlined in the Carl Perkins Act. The button to the left will link you to the complete standards.
Smarter Balanced is a state-led consortium that is writing assessments to match the Common Core State Standards in ELA and Math. North Carolina is helping lead this effort.
